What is the concept behind Social Responsive Music?

The percussion aspect adds a tremendous interest/fun factor.
VALUE:
I believe that every voice in a community should have an equal value.
This program encourages the quiet and insecure voices while bringing dominant voices into alignment.

Also embracing NYC Music Blueprint Learning Qualities, participants engage as a community creating a non-verbal, hands-on improvisational musical journey. Participants, utilizing low volume percussion, respond to the group while drawing from cultural experiences and inspirations to create connections and perform a unique collaborative creation that maintains a low or moderate volume.
Can be presented as a multi-discipline project (i.e. utilizing a dance or art component)

LONG TERM BENEFITS
The program promotes Team Building as well as overcoming fears of new situations.
It has also been utilized within Stress Management (or Stress Relief) Workshops.
It has also been utilized within Stress Management (or Stress Relief) Workshops.
There is a mindfulness and relaxation component in each session which intensifies listening skills. Each soundscape re-enforces the concept that every contribution is valuable - each sound alters the path, character and outcome of the collaboration. It is an important LIFE lesson, too, that every person is significant and every contribution makes a difference.
|
This program was born from a desire to teach young musicians the skill of focused listening during rehearsals and performances. As I gave workshops to that end, I realized that creating a heightened mindfulness was applicable to non-musicians as well.

WHY
When I specifically chose softer percussion instruments as a medium, I realized how I was also teaching the art of cooperation - sharing an experience as a community, where there was no ‘lead drummer” (some classes utilize percussion without any ‘drums’ at all) but solely equal-valued contributors. I loved seeing ‘the quiet ones’ gain their voices while ‘the loud ones’ learned to be happy without grabbing for attention.
This community-based activity engages Multiple Intelligences (Auditory-Musical, Kinesthetic, Tactile, Active, Social/Interpersonal, Logical-Mathematical) while producing a heightened auditory mindfulness (improved listening skills), pride in achievement and reduction of stress! |

Goal
Create a soundscape through a communal improvisational performance. Procedure Respond to the community around you based on your life experiences, inspiration and connect to produce a unique or performable collaborative creation using LOW volume percussion instruments. Lesson Every ‘voice’ and every contribution is important and changes the path and outcome of the collaboration. Intensified listening skills continue after collaboration ends - useful in school, sports and daily living. |
